about

Sandefjord is the second song from the album Blonde on Blue by Chanan Lesli Mattison, a pop and light rock singer-songwriter from Calgary Alberta. The song was first played at the album’s official release at the then (2003) reknowned nitespot of Kaos Jazz n’ Blues Nitespot in Calgary. The song itself describes an idyllic love story with a Norwegian or Scandinavian beauty and their sensual meeting at Sandefjord, a coastal spot south of Oslo. Did she really exist or is she fictional? Chanan has himself hinted that she was an amalgam as many of his love interests are in Blonde on Blue. The song has quite an interesting mixture of love plus acknowledgment of its impossibility though it isn’t clear what the reason is, thus also mixing a dry realism to romantic fantasy. The best comparison of the songs progenitors would likely be Joni Mitchell in that it brings with it a high degree of intimacy and then couples that with an acknowledged Mitchell style, just like the title song evokes a more masculine influence, turning out evocative of the vocal style of jim morrison. Though the album is fairly “unplugged,” by having the songs in such an illustrious stream of progenitors its achieves an enjoyable level because of the strength of the compositions. Its amazing that this level was reached with just Chanan freely admitting that he recorded everything himself in his own living room, and is waiting still to “be discovered.”
